Empowering women

In November 2022, the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development appointed First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa as the patron for Agriculture-for-She, an innovative initiative aimed at empowering women through agriculture. With Zimbabwe’s strong agricultural heritage, farming serves as the backbone of its economy.

As a farmer herself, the First Lady has actively supported farming projects through her Angel of Hope Foundation. Her initiatives focus on assisting various demographics, including the elderly, persons with disabilities, former commercial sex workers, youth, and orphans, in becoming self-sufficient through farming.

Under the Agric4She initiative, women receive essential inputs, chemicals, and machinery to enhance their agricultural endeavors. Dr. Mnangagwa emphasizes the crucial role women play in ensuring food security and nutrition, advocating for their recognition and support in agriculture.

The Agric4She program encompasses Pfumvudza4She, Livestock4She, Fisheries4She, Horticulture4She, NEAPS4She, and Mechanisation4She, benefiting thousands of women across ongoing initiatives. The First Lady actively participates in all farming stages, from planting to harvesting, fostering hands-on learning and support.

Amidst global challenges posed by climate change, Dr. Mnangagwa champions the promotion of traditional grains like sorghum, rapoko, and millet, resilient to adverse weather conditions. Her efforts in this regard have yielded significant success, addressing food security concerns.

In her commitment to empower women and youths while enhancing national food security, the First Lady introduced the National Potato Farming Programme. Supported by agronomists and Agritex officers, the program facilitates women’s entry into commercial potato production, providing necessary resources for success.

Recognizing her dedication to empowering women in agriculture, the Zimbabwe Women in Cotton Development Trust appointed Dr. Mnangagwa as the patron for women in cotton farming. Her continued efforts aim to increase women’s participation in cotton production, improving livelihoods across communities.

Additionally, Dr. Mnangagwa launched an urban transformational program through her Angel of Hope Foundation, uplifting urbanites and the less privileged through income-generating projects, including farming and poultry production. With comprehensive support provided by her foundation, these initiatives contribute to a food-secure nation.

The nation celebrates Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa’s initiatives, which have resulted in abundant food resources, including traditional grains, ensuring that no one goes hungry.
