First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa has commended Zimbabwean surgeons for their sterling work in conducting major procedures locally, a development she said, was in line with the country’s Vision 2030.

In a speech read on her behalf by Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Owen Ncube at the Zimbabwe Surgical Society Association of Zimbabwe 30th Commemorations at Gweru Provincial Hospital on Friday, Dr Mnangagwa said local doctors have had several successful procedures and positioning Zimbabwe’s health care system on top.

“I am pleased to note that the society has been instrumental in expanding access to quality surgical care across the nation through decentralisation of services with qualified surgeons now serving in various cities and towns for the benefit of all Zimbabweans under pined by the Second Republic’s decentralisation and devolution agenda.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the choice of this venue is befitting as Gweru Provincial Hospital is a centre of excellence with several successful surgical procedures having been completed here,” she said.

Dr Mnangagwa said Gweru Hospital was the first in the country to conduct a spine surgery, with many patients now seeking surgical procedures locally.

“The successes of local surgeons here and regionally are a source of inspiration. These accolades garnered by our surgeons coupled by the ground breaking surgical success such as the separation of co-joined and the cardiac surgeries underscore the calibre of excellence that defines the surgical society of Zimbabwe,” said Dr Mnangagwa.

Surgical Society of Zimbabwe president Dr Wilfred Muteweye said the society has grown with over 200 surgeons trained locally and abroad.

“As we celebrate our milestone 30th anniversary as the Surgical Society of Zimbabwe with over 200 surgeons now, we will be conducting free surgical procedures and consultations at Gweru provincial Hospital for a week,” he said. – Herald
